Conferences are a part of business life. Odds are you have been to one or more during your career. And obviously, some are better than others.
At some point, you and your company may be in the position of having to put together a conference. If you are, here are a few tips to make sure your conference is one that people are raving about, rather than complaining about.
1. Have good speakers.
This should be pretty much a no-brainer. But, even so, we have all been to conferences where the speakers were sleep inducing. Their presentations were monotonous, uninteresting, monotone. They make things even worse with a PowerPoint presentation where they tried to cram too much information on each slide.
Some people look to hire big name speakers to increase turnout. But these people aren’t always the best speakers. You need to find people who know how to teach, not just talk. These are people who are dynamic, but also offer ideas and strategies that will engage and challenge their audience.
2. Give practical advice and information.
People should be able to take away from the conference information and ideas that are useful, things that they can implement in their own jobs, stuff that they can begin using right away. Big picture presentations, talks about trends are fine as far as they go, but the focus needs to be on what is relevant to people’s day-to-day jobs.
3. Provide networking opportunities.
The conference should provide opportunities for the people attending to meet and get to know each other, to form relationships that may be mutually beneficial in their businesses. This is more than just chatting with other conference goers over coffee and Danish before the start of a presentation.
It means providing social events designed especially for the purpose of enabling people to get to know each other, to find out how they can help each other with their business. To make this easier to do, you can put together social events at different venues, such as restaurants or pubs.
The key when putting on a conference is keeping your audience in mind, providing what is most useful to them. If you do, your conference will surely be a success.
