Studies show that people spend a lot of time at their jobs. In one survey, almost everyone reported spending more than 50 hours a week at work. It can create a lot of stress, causing health problems and personal problems as well.
Workaholism is not good for anyone. And most people understand the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance, although the exact definition of such a balance may differ. Here are some tips on helping to maintain some type of equilibrium.
1. Don’t be a perfectionist.
When we are younger, and our responsibilities are fewer, it is easier to develop perfectionist tendencies. But as we grow older, our responsibilities multiply, and trying to do everything perfectly all the time simply is not feasible any more. The demands on our time and attention are just too many and varied to be able to perform each one of them impeccably.
We have to learn to establish priorities, to determine those things that need to be done as well as we possibly can do them, and the more routine tasks that we just need to get out of the way. Trying to do everything perfectly is a recipe for insanity.
2. Turn off the electronics
Technology has improved our lives immeasurably, but it can hurt our quality of life as well. We need to disconnect from our phones. Try not to check email or text after you go home for the day. If you continually do this, it will feel like the workday never ends.
3. Exercise, meditate
Exercise is something people often neglect, and they shouldn’t. It is a great stress reliever. It has many other health benefits as well, including improving mood, improving alertness and ability of focus, enhancing energy levels, and reducing the likelihood of a variety of diseases.
Meditation is also a great stress reliever. It too helps improves focus and concentration.
4. Eliminate time wasters
Just as you need to establish priorities at work, you should do the same for your personal life. Identify the activities that are most important to you, and make sure you schedule time for them without interruption.
Avoid activities that suck up time, such as surfing the Internet, playing video games or watching television.
5. Change your habits
Are there things you do routinely that cut into your time or cause undue stress? Change your routine or break old habits that are holding you back.
It is best to make these changes gradually, a little bit at a time. Trying to do it all at once is a recipe for failure.
