Your business has been growing, and you are hiring more people. But you have run into a problem – a lack of space. It’s time to make a move. Moving your business is obviously a big undertaking. There are many things to consider. Here are a few items to keep in mind to help you.

1. Make a plan.
This may sound pretty obvious, but it needs to be said. Don’t wait until the last minute to pack things up and find a mover. You are just asking for trouble.

You need to create a timetable for what you are going to do and when you are going to do it so that there are no surprises. You need to plan what things you will be moving at what time and what will stay. You need to line up a mover as well.

2. Don’t do it yourself
Depending on the size of your business, you might be tempted to make all or part of the move yourself. Resist the urge. Professional movers know what they are doing; they have experience to deal with unexpected situations. You do not. If you encounter problems with the move, it could delay restarting your business and result in some unhappy customers.

Find out what things the moving company cannot transport, so you can make other arrangements.

3. Make plans for confidential files
There are many types of records where you need to be conscious of security, such as credit card records, payments records, files on clients. If you are a medical practice with medical records, there are HIPAA guidelines you need to be aware of. So, you also need to make arrangements for moving these materials as well.

4. Formulate contingency plans
You need to think about what could go wrong and come up with backup plans to handle these problems. For example, what will you do if you cannot move in on the anticipated date? Also, take out insurance in case something gets lost or damaged, and make plans for how you will work with customers if there is a delay.

5. Leave some things behind.
This is an opportunity to look at your equipment and evaluate its usefulness. If there are things you are not using, get rid of them instead of moving them.
