According to a recent survey, many companies are not doing enough to get feedback from their employees, and so are depriving themselves of significant insights about their business, workplace morale and productivity.
Almost half of the companies responding to the survey indicated that they did no routine surveying of their employees for their input. But, just as disturbing, half of the companies that did contact their employees for feedback ignored the results.
Companies in the southern section of the United States appear most likely to get feedback from the employees, where nearly 60 percent said they have some kind of feedback program with employees.
Business analysts said getting feedback from employees in important and should not be bypassed. Getting feedback allows employees to express their opinions and to have input on the companies goals, values and vision. Feedback becomes even more crucial at times when the company is undergoing some kind of transition. During these times when things are in flux, employee input adds to their engagement and their stake in the success of the business.
Research shows that when companies stay in touch with their workers, and pay attention to the workers’ ideas and opinions, it affects how employees feel about their jobs and the satisfaction they have with their jobs. Employees definitely have a more positive feeling about the working environment when they know management is listening to them.
There are several issues that routinely receive the most attention from workers, as is revealed in worker surveys. The most prominent issue is related to salaries. One situation connected to salaries that workers cite often is the compression of pay between newer and older employees. Workers also feel that pay raises were not tied closely enough to performance, according to surveys. The surveys also revealed several other common threads among the concerns of workers. The high cost of health insurance is one such concern, along with organizational structures that are concentrated too heavily at the top.
Other issues that surfaced involved communication between employees and managers, which the workers thought needed to be improved, and that managers need to make themselves more available to employees.
