Sometimes it can be hard to get moving at work. You’re just not feeling it. You feel like Sisyphus, a figure in Greek mythology, who was condemned to push a boulder up a hill, only to have it roll back down again. In other words, you’ve lost your motivation, your zeal and energy to get things done. What can you do when this happens? Here are a few tips.

Remember your goals

Setting goals, and working toward them, is a good way to get motivated. In fact, neuroscientists say that there is actually a physiological reason for this. The goal itself is in a sense a reward, and so the act of setting that goal and working toward it causes our brain to release a chemical called dopamine. This substance produces the feeling of pleasure we get when receiving a reward for something.

Set priorities

Setting priorities helps you to establish the tasks that are most important and need to be taken care of first. Having this kind of clarity can be energizing because you know definitely what you need to do.

Break up your assignments

If you have a big project that you need to work on, just thinking about all that’s involved with it can drain your motivation. What you need to do is break it up into smaller, more pliant tasks and focus only on each task separately. This makes the whole thing more manageable and can help to keep you motivated

Set deadlines

Set deadlines for each task that you need to do because feeling the time pressure is another way to keep yourself motivated.

Use time management techniques

This includes things like the Pomodoro method, planning your day, making a schedule, not multitasking, and cutting out distractions.

Reward yourself

When you finish a task, give yourself a little reward. It could be something as simple as a snack or a chat with a coworker.

Read

Reading the biographies of successful people is also a great motivator. You see how they faced obstacles and what they did to overcome them, how they struggled and persevered to achieve their goals.
