Being socially responsible is an important goal for many companies. They understand the value of helping their communities and society in general. Many companies do this through philanthropy and organizing employee volunteer programs.

Survey Results

A recent survey by a California management resources company confirms the value of social programs. More than 2,000 CFOs were contacted in the survey in a random sampling of companies from the 20 largest cities in the country.

About 80 percent of companies responding said being socially responsible is important to them. Not only does it help communities, it also improves morale at the company, helps enhance the company’s reputation and brand awareness, and helps with recruiting and retention. It is also a good way to network.

People want to work for and support companies that help their communities, according to human resource experts. Well-run businesses make social responsibility a part of their culture by giving employees the time and resources to volunteer for charitable work and with other community organizations.

But these efforts must be sincere and authentic, not simply as an afterthought or just for the sake of appearance. Businesses should look for opportunities that align with their own company values. And they should do more than just give money, but also offer their products and allow employees to donate time as well.

Here are a few things companies can do to build up programs that help their communities:

1. Get employee input

Employees should be able to provide ideas and suggestions about what volunteer opportunities the company should pursue. The decisions should be made jointly by managers and employees.

2. Keep workers informed

Let the workforce know what the company is doing with its community outreach efforts. Give periodic updates on corporate giving and what employees are doing in their volunteer efforts. Also, keep workers informed about volunteer opportunities that are available.

3. Support employee efforts

Companies can really show their support for community outreach by giving employees time off from work to do volunteer activities. Whether they work alone or with a group, employees should be given the time to contribute to philanthropic activities.
