Setbacks at work and life in general are something we all have to deal with. Some are easier to surmount than others. That is why resilience is such a valued quality – the ability to bounce back from failure. Many consider it to be the most valuable trait a person can have for a successful career. Here are a few tips on how to develop resilience.
Remember that difficulties are to be expected.
Studies have shown that more than 80 percent of people suffer setbacks during their first attempt at reaching a goal. It is natural, it is normal. In short, obstacles are something you should expect and plan for.
Sometimes we refuse to admit that we have suffered a defeat or a failure. But the first step in moving ahead is admitting and acknowledging the setback, and then setting about correcting it. Denial only makes matters worse.
Don’t be too hard on yourself.
If you have made a mistake, made a poor decision or behaved in a way detrimental to your well being, accept that you are human and that we all make mistakes. You cannot be so critical of yourself that you lose sight of your ultimate goal. When some people fail, they feel that they themselves are failures, without any redeeming value, and this only makes progress even harder.
While some people beat themselves up over a setback, others refuse to take any responsibility at all, looking instead for something or someone else to blame. This is equally as bad because it prevents you from taking the steps you need to in order to move ahead.
Ask for help.
Do not feel embarrassed to admit your mistake to others and ask for help from family or friends if you need it. This can create the kind of supportive environment needed to regroup and move forward.
It is not permanent.
You have to look at all setbacks as something temporary, a minor roadblock on the way to your eventual success. And that is also why you need to set to work repairing the damage as soon as you can. Don’t wait weeks or months to get back on track because this will only make things harder.
Reflect on the setback and what may have caused it.
What were the causes of the failure, and what can you do in the future to prevent the same thing from happening again? Often, we suffer setbacks because of our own anxiety and stress, or our overconfidence or inadequate coping skills.
Learn from the failure.
Each time you make a mistake, you learn from it and make adjustments that will prevent it from happening again. As you learn from each setback, you make changes and become even more effective as you continue on your way. A quote from Samuel Beckett sums up the process well, “ Ever try. Ever fail. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
