There is an old saying, “Well begun is half done.” It speaks to the importance of getting started. Many of us are good at getting started. It’s the finishing part that seems to elude us. We don’t follow through. We quit too soon, focusing more on what we have accomplished than what we have yet to do.
What can you do to ensure that you make it to the finish line? Here are a few tips.
1. Consider what project you are starting.
In other words, you need to do a little long-term thinking when you start something. How long will it take? What kind of resources and effort will you need to put in? If you don’t have the time or the resources to finish a project going into it, you are just setting yourself up for failure.
Also, you need to make a commitment to finish it. You cannot put in a half-hearted effort and expect to finish. You need to devote all of your energy and focus to it.
2. Make goals.
Your overall goal naturally is to finish the task. But to make sure you get there, you should also set smaller, benchmark goals along the way, similar to steps going up to a landing. These smaller goals will help to keep you motivated.
You also need to lay out what steps you will take to achieve these goals.
3. Reward yourself
This is another way to ensure that you actually make it to the finish line. You should reward yourself when you complete the task. But also, reward yourself for reaching all of those benchmark goals along the way.
4. Make time.
Often, people just don’t finish tasks because they don’t make them a priority. If something is important enough to get done, it is important enough to make time for it. If you don’t have the time, you need to make time. Add the task to your schedule for a set time during the day to make sure you get to it.
5. Enlist a friend.
Tell a friend or colleague about your project. This creates a sense of obligation to get it done. Also, your friend can help to keep you motivated and encourage you to stay on track.
