Anger is a common emotion. In fact, we may feel it a number of times during an average work day. There is a lot at work that can make us angry, dealing with coworkers, supervisors, workload, even vending machines that don’t work.
So, because it is such a basic and common emotion, it is important to learn how to best handle our anger. There are many common misperceptions about the emotion that people should be aware of so that they can better manage it. Here are a few facts about anger.
1. Anger is not a bad thing to feel.
We see anger as a negative emotion, one that we should not feel because no good can come of it. But it really is not a destructive emotion. In fact, psychologists say it is a normal, even healthy emotion to have. Channeled in the right way, it can lead to changes for the better.
2. Anger is not the same as aggression.
Anger is not the same thing as being aggressive. While feeling anger is generally healthy, aggression is not. Aggression is using force, coercion or violence against someone, and that obviously is not good.
3. Venting your anger does not make it go away.
People believe that throwing something, yelling, and the like will help them somehow to release their anger, but it doesn’t work. You usually only end up feeling worse.
4. Suppressing your anger doesn’t work either.
Some try the opposite tack. They believe that if they suppress, make believe it isn’t there, that it will simply go away. They smile or act cheerful when in reality they are seething inside. Turning your anger inward can actually lead to health problems like high blood pressure and depression.
The best way to deal with anger, according to psychologists, is to find a constructive way to express it. For example, channeling that anger energy into doing something productive, or using it to assert yourself when you feel you are being mistreated.
But it is important that you are in touch with your emotions, so you recognize the early warning signs of anger, when the pressure is starting to build. That way, you can take action to let off a little steam, such as deep breaths, or going for walk.
After you have calmed down, then figure out what you can do to solve the problem that has been causing your anger, or how to express yourself to someone who has angered you.
