Are you not getting as much done as you would like? Do you find yourself getting bogged down doing nonessential things? If you are losing your focus and your productivity is flagging, you may need to make some adjustments to your daily routine. Here are a few things to consider.

1. Pare your to do lists
We all make to do lists. But these lists can actually hurt rather than help our productivity. The problem arises when these lists get too long, filled up with a lot of nonessential tasks. We end up doing things that aren’t that important just so we can cross them off our list.To get more focused, you should shorten your to do list and prioritize your tasks.

Even better than writing to do lists is to put the tasks on your calendar. That way, you have a definite time when they need to be done, as opposed to a to do list, where there is no time constraint on your tasks.

2. Say no more often
We often get coworkers or friends asking for help, and the natural inclination is to assist them. Naturally, you don’t want to turn down every request, but if you find yourself spending more time on other people’s projects than your own, it’s time to take a look at your policy about helping others.
You need to maintain some degree of selectivity in responding to requests for help.

3. Cut out the multitasking.
Multitasking used to be seen as a way to enhance productivity, but research has shown just the opposite – it actually hinders our productivity. It is much better to do one task at a time, which enables you to focus exclusively on that task, rather than scattering your attention among several activities.

4. Focus on progress rather than productivity.
Getting things done – productivity — is great, but are the things you have accomplished the most important or the most meaningful? Progress, as opposed to productivity, means moving toward the goals that are most important and meaningful to you.

5. Keep more of an eye on your energy than on time.
Instead of watching the clock to make sure you have enough time to get things done, pay more attention to your physical and mental energy levels to make sure they are high enough to get the work done you need to. If they are not, replenishing them should be your priority.

6. Take breaks.
Research has shown that we can focus intently only for about an hour, so you should schedule a break at least every hour.

7. Get important things done at the beginning of the day.
The start of your day is when you are the most alert and have the most energy, the best time to do the stuff that really matters to you. Also, by doing it at the start of the day, you make sure you get it done, before other things begin to interfere.
