Thanks to technology, people are now more and more working with others who may be in different parts of the country or different parts of the world. In addition, working from home has become much more common. According to some recent studies, about 30 million people in the United States – about one in five workers – now telecommute or work from home at least one day of the week. That number is expected to increase by more than 60 percent by 2018.

Working from home certainly has its advantages – no commute to work, not worrying about what you have to wear, not being bothered by coworkers or meetings. It allows you the flexibility to work when you want or when you feel the most productive.

But it has its disadvantages as well. One of the most salient of these is making sure you focus on work. It’s all too easy when you are at home to get distracted from what you really need to do.

For that reason, by far the most important thing you can do to be successful in working from home is this – setting rock-solid boundaries. You cannot let other things interfere with your work. You have to be tenacious about this if you are going to be successful. Here are a few things you need to watch out for:

1. Family and friends
You may have friends who might want to drop by, or family members who want to talk to you. You need to tell them ahead of time that you cannot meet with them during work hours, and explain why so there are no hard feelings.

Another problem is handling children. Human resource experts recommend you hire someone to look after your children while you work. You cannot do both.

2. Household chores
Don’t let these get in the way of work either. You may want to throw a load of laundry in the washer or put a few dishes in the dishwasher, but resist the urge. Again, you need to focus on work. You managed to get these household duties done when you didn’t work at home, you can do the same now.

3. Other fun stuff
You may want to take a peek at the television, or surf the Web for a few minutes, or go work in the garden for a bit. Here again, you need to keep those boundaries inviolate if you want to get your work done. Doing these things may be nice, but are you doing them at the expense of your clients?
