Trust among coworkers at their companies is at an all-time low. Trust is built into our natures. It’s part of how we function in society. But often we sabotage our own attempts at creating a bond of trust with others because we are unaware of the effect that our actions are having.

If you want to raise the level of trust at your workplace, whether you are a manager or an employee, there are things that you can do:

1. Take care of conflicts right away.

Don’t allow arguments or tensions among employees to fester. This is a very effective trust killer. Take care of these situations immediately, in a firm and direct way. This will help to build trust.

2. Watch what you say.

Especially if you are a supervisor, remember that what you say can come back to bite you later. Words have consequences, and people will be listening very carefully, so don’t be careless when you talk to your team.

3. Find out what your blind spots are.

We are much better at seeing the faults in others than we are in seeing those in ourselves. These are our blind spots. Talk with people you know and trust and ask them about faults they see that could prevent people from trusting you. They will see things about your behavior that you are most likely missing.

4. Watch how you react to others.

At some point, others you work with will do or say something that disappoints you, annoys you, maybe embarrasses you. How you react to these things will go a long way toward establishing or destroying trust.

5. Forming strong bonds of trust before you really need them.

Forming strong, trusting relationships with coworkers or subordinates may not be on your radar screen, taking a back seat to other priorities. But sooner or later, a situation or crisis will arise where you are going to need the trust of others in order to take care of the situation. If you haven’t made the effort to form those bonds, solving problems will be that much harder.

6 . Paying attention to office politics.

Every office has them. There are people who dislike other people and may do or say things to put others in a negative light. To prevent this from happening to you, you need to make sure that you always behave with integrity, so that people know what to expect from you. They will expect the best from you rather than believing the worst.
