You’ve interviewed for several jobs and finally – finally! – you’ve received a job offer.
And so you start negotiating on the salary. And then the offer is rescinded. What the heck happened?
Perhaps, just maybe, is it possible….did your ego get in your way?
Negotiation skills are critical in this job market. Many business sectors in Manhattan and elsewhere are in the proverbial catbird seat when it comes to finding great people to work for what some might call “pennies” compared to salary offers of the mid-2000s.
So you’ll need to get in touch with the reality of your sector and learn how to negotiate in a way that a) gets you most of what you want and b) gets the employer most of what she wants when it comes to your salary/benefits package.
You do have some power here, of course. You are in a great spot between the time the job offer is extended and when you accept it. After all, the company wants you and is willing to negotiate your salary.
But you need to have realistic expectations. First off, don’t play your hand too early. That is, don’t mention your salary requirements, or that you’d like to work at home at least one day a week before you’re offered the position. You need to sell your value first.
In addition, never give notice at your current employer until you have an offer letter. In writing.
Don’t haggle over every little thing. Decide on your “must haves,” but make them one or two items at most.
Yes, the hiring manager has been wowed by you. After all, she’s offered you the position. But don’t let it go to your head. Remember, the hiring manager may have a backup candidate in mind. Once again, decide what you can’t live without and, if necessary, concede the “would be nice to have” aspects of your salary, benefits, work/life balance, etc.
What’s the best outcome in your salary/benefits negotiations? When both of you feel you got most of what you want. You feel you have a fair and happy salary/benefits package and your hiring manager feels she “got” you at a salary/benefits package she can live with.
