When at work, we are constantly dealing with problems. They can be of various kinds – something doesn’t go as planned, or attempts to improve some process have hit a snag, or there is some type of conflict.
And some problems can be more difficult to solve than others. The key to solving most problems, however, especially the most prickly ones, is how you approach them, the method you use to solve them. To help with this, here are a few different ways to approach problem solving that may help you deal with your most stubborn conundrums.
1. Try to understand the nature of the problem.
To solve a problem, you first need to know exactly what kind of situation you are facing. To gain this understanding, you need to acquire information about the problem. A good place to start in learning more about the problem is with the five W’s – who, what, when, where and why.
You want to find out the history of the problem, what led up to it, what is causing it. You may find that there is actually more than one cause to the problem. You may want to find out if there is a pattern to this situation.
Try to think about your current situation, only without the problem you are experiencing. This may help you to see the nature of the problem and how to deal with it.
2. Get different perspectives on the problem.
You may want to talk to other people about the situation to see how they see it from their point of view. This may give you some additional insight that may help you solve it.
3. Take it one step at a time.
The best way to tackle any big project is to break it down into smaller parts, and then work on each part, one at a time. The same it true for any problem. Break it down into smaller parts if possible, and then try to solve each smaller piece.
4. Take a break.
Sometimes, after working on a problem strenuously and continuously for a period of time, getting away from it for a little while can actually help to solve it. By taking a break, you give yourself a little room to relax and look at it from another point of view. You give your unconscious mind time to work on it as well.
