If you’re like many people, you’ve been working at home for quite some time. You may be enjoying the time away from the office or looking forward to returning to the workplace. Whatever the case, you may find that you’re getting into a well-worn routine. It may be getting a little tiresome, and you’re ready for a change. Here are a few things that you can do to mix up your routine at home to make things a little more interesting and keep you motivated.

1. Location, location, location

When you began working at home, you probably set up a dedicated workspace. To change things up a little, think about moving to a new location for a little while. It could be another place in the house or even outside of the house, at a library or coffee shop, for example.

Also, take a look at where you’re currently working with an eye toward how well the setup is serving your needs. Can you move your desk for a better view? Is your chair comfortable enough? Could you perhaps add some plants or a painting to make the area a little more attractive?

Look at what is working for you and what isn’t.

2. Some new tunes

Do you listen to music while you work? You probably have a favorite singer or genre of music. Get a little adventuresome with your music selections and try something different. If you’ve been listening to country, try jazz or rock. Change up your playlist for a change of pace.

3. Change up your schedule

The day can feel long working at home because you’re so isolated. You can’t wander over to a coworker’s desk and chat. But you do have more flexibility working from home. For example, if you find that your energy is really beginning to flag in the afternoon, you can begin work earlier and end earlier in the day.

Or you can take a break with a midday walk or run a few errands and then work a little later to make up the time.

4. Go outdoors

This is a great way to break up the routine. Take a break and go for a walk outside. This helps in several ways — it gets your blood flowing and gives you more energy, it improves your mood, and it improves your health. Plus, you get to enjoy the sights and sounds of being outside.

5. Give yourself a reward

Set small work goals for yourself throughout the day, and then give yourself a reward for reaching them. For example, if you finish a project in the morning, treat yourself to lunch at a neighborhood restaurant. Or reward yourself with a coffee break after you’ve crossed a few things off your to-do list.
