For many, searching for a job is a stressful process. It can time consuming and more than a little tedious. There is a lot to do – researching companies, putting together resumes and cover letters, networking, maintaining a social media presence, and keeping track of everything. Here are a few tips to help make the process go more smoothly.
1. Stay organized and make a schedule
Staying organized will go a long way toward making the job search a more efficient and pleasant process. You should have a workable filing system, with both electronic and paper folders for all of your documents. There are many different platforms online specifically made to help keep the job search organized, to keep track of tasks and people you have contacted. Don’t let loose papers pile up. You will regret it later when you try to find a particular letter or document.
Studies have shown that people who have organized work spaces are less stressed than those with messy work areas.
Prioritize your tasks and then make a weekly and daily schedule for what you are going to do, when you are going to do it, and how long you are going to do it for. Then stick to the schedule. Also, keep a record of what you have done each day.
2. Ten minutes at a time process
Sometimes it is difficult to get started on tasks you may find particularly distasteful. This leads to procrastination, which can really slow down your search.
To avoid this problem, commit to giving just 10 minutes to the task. After the 10 minutes, you can decide what else you want to do. This little trick will help you get started. What you will find is that often, after working for 10 minutes, you have built up enough momentum that you usually want to continue.
3. Target your search
Some people believe in quantity over quality. These are the ones who proudly proclaim they have sent out several hundred resumes in a short amount of time. The problem is, they probably didn’t get any responses.
Mass mailings like this don’t work. You need to target your search for jobs you are best qualified for, at companies where you really want to work. Then you need to research those jobs and companies and tailor your resume for those particular jobs.
4. Set goals
Set short-term and long-term goals for what you want to accomplish. This will give you something to strive for. You can do it on a daily basis, for example, setting a goal for how many contacts you want to make, or how many resumes you want to write that day. Set long-term goals also, for what you want accomplish that week or month.
