To attract the best people, you have to catch their interest. That begins with the job description. It is the first contact a job candidate will have with your company and the job itself. If it is filled with plodding boilerplate language, it is unlikely to gain much interest.

Here are a few tips on how to make a job description that attracts attention.

1. Pay attention to the title

You might think this would be a hard thing to mess up, but there are several ways you can err with this. Some companies, for example, in an attempt to make the job seem interesting and eye-catching, get a little too inventive. They describe a coding job as ninja coder or say they need a rockstar salesperson.

But these kinds of bubble gum titles might actually have the reverse effect on some high performing candidates, who may see the descriptions as a little too glib, suggesting that the company itself is not giving these jobs the respect they deserve.

Also, some companies try to come up with job titles that are original or quirky, describing a position as a client advocate, for example, instead of a customer service representative. But the second title is much more well known, and it is what job candidates will be looking for.

2. Incorporate company values

Writing about company values and mission in the job description will help to set it apart from all the others. It will also help to give the candidate more of an idea of what the company is like and whether your values align with theirs. You are more likely to attract people who share your values and someone who is a good fit with the company.

3. Keep the language clear, simple, and direct

Job descriptions normally outline the qualifications needed for the job, its duties and responsibilities, and the benefits. The goal here is to describe these things as clearly as possible – the experience, education, training needed; the day-to-day tasks, the salary range, insurance plans. You want to avoid jargon and vague wording.

It should also try to give the candidate some idea of what it is like to work at the company, for example, that you strive for a good work-life balance, and also explain why the job is important.
