The pandemic is changing the way Americans do their jobs. Many are now working remotely. Meetings are being held online through platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet.

There has been a lot of disruption, and people are still adapting to the new ways of doing things. Some still are not comfortable with video conferences and meetings. It is a little unsettling for them to have to look into a camera, and to interact with people through a computer screen.

But one business leader sees many advantages to video conferences and believes they may just be the wave of the future. Here are some of the benefits.

1. They tend to be more well organized

People generally don’t want to have to stay online any longer than they have to, so online meetings run on a tighter schedule with a more methodical approach. Organizers are more likely to get the agenda out in advance and the meetings are more likely to begin and end when they are supposed to.

People follow the guidelines set up – staying on mute when not talking, using the chat area for questions, and raising a hand to speak.

2. People are less likely to monopolize the discussion

In face-to-face meetings, there are sometimes people who interrupt others or who talk loudly and marginalize other people. This kind of behavior is eliminated with online meetings because people need to take turns talking and listening when others are speaking if any progress is to be made.

3. Physical presence loses its importance

Some people dominate meetings simply because of sheer size. But with online meetings, behaviors like shaking fingers, waving hands, or leaning across a table to make a point are all eliminated. A person’s physical presence no longer plays a role.

4. Everyone has a view

When someone is making a presentation during a meeting, depending on the room and seating arrangement, it can be hard to see and hear what the person is saying. But with virtual meetings, everyone has a good view and good audio.

5. They save time

With virtual meetings, people don’t need to travel to attend. They don’t even have to leave the house.

6. Location doesn’t matter

With a virtual meeting, it doesn’t matter where people are located, on the other side of the city or the country. They can take part no matter where they are.
