As the pandemic continues to surge, many companies are moving to a more remote workforce. According to one survey, almost two-thirds of all companies have some portion of their workforce working remotely. Almost half of all employees work from home occasionally. However, about 80 percent of employees say they want to work at home at least some of the time.

While many businesses are moving to remote work out of necessity, they remain somewhat wary of the arrangement, unsure how it will work for them, and not willing to jump in with both feet. For those who remain unconvinced of the benefits of working remotely, here are some ways it can help a company.

1. Maintaining stability and consistency

Having some portion of the workforce working remotely can help to maintain continuity during disruptions – such as we are experiencing now with Covid-19.

2. Saving money

It is simply cheaper to have people work from home. According to one estimate, companies can save $11,000 a year for each employee who works half-time at home.

Having people work remotely reduces costs across the board, everything from phone, electricity, heating, furniture, insurance to maintenance costs.

3. Attracting the best people

At the top of the wish list for many workers today is having flexibility in their work life, the kind of flexibility that remote work offers. It is especially important to millennials.

4. Enhancing productivity

One concern employers have with remote work is a suspicion that employees are not working as hard at home as they would be at the office. Some managers feel they need to be physically present to keep an eye on their workers. But studies have shown that people are actually more productive at home than in the office.

There are several reasons for this. First, they don’t have to worry about interruptions from managers and coworkers. Remote workers don’t have to deal with the stress of a morning and evening commute. And they have a more comfortable working environment.

Research has shown that people are most engaged with their work when they can spend at least three to four days a week at home.

5. Helping the environment

Having a remote workforce helps to reduce pollution, traffic congestion, and greenhouse gases.
