An integral part of any job is making decisions. During any work day, people are making many of them, some involving minor issues, others that are much more significant. Because of this, it is important to make decisions effectively. Often, decisions are difficult to make. Sometimes there is a mountain of information to sift through, and you feel overwhelmed. Other times, there just does not seem to be a clear cut way forward. There is too much ambiguity. Here are a few tips to help.

1. Cut out the distractions.

Making good decisions involves some mental heavy lifting. You need to be focused, thinking clearly and creatively. That’s why it is important to remove as many distractions as you can. Find a quiet place to think. Take a break from all of the electronics. Cut out all of the noise and other

It may even help to take a few moments to meditate to calm yourself and clear your mind. Take a few minutes to simply sit quietly and focus on your breathing, without thinking about anything else.

2. Think about the issue itself

In other words, get clear in your own mind what exactly you are trying to decide. After pondering it, you may realize it’s not what you think. There may be some deeper, underlying concern.

Take a step back and try to view the issue from a broader perspective. You may be looking at the problem in a too limited or circumscribed way. Taking a wider view may reveal other problems or issues that impact your decision.

Heed the words of Albert Einstein: “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions.”

3. Reflection

After you have defined the question as best you can, and considered various approaches, you should give your mind a little time to assimilate the information. This is not analysis, but more a way of giving your mind the time and space to absorb the information and work with it, to let it percolate.

Often, in this way the answer becomes clear, like a hazy image becomes clearer as you focus a camera lens.
