Companies these days are getting a little more creative in the way they interview job candidates. Firms are interviewing people in different settings and situations – over a meal, for example, or drinks, or even outdoors.

The intent is to get a better idea of what candidates are really like, to see how they handle themselves in different circumstances. Here are a few tips on how to handle such situations.

1. Preparation
The first thing to keep in mind is that you should prepare for these interviews just like you would a more conventional one. Do your research. Learn as much as you can about the company and the people you will be dealing with. Practice your responses to common interview questions. Come prepared with facts and figures about your accomplishments.

But for these types of interviews, there is also a little extra you need to do.

2. Interview over a meal
Be careful how you treat the restaurant staff. Make sure you are polite and respectful. You can be sure the hiring manager will be taking note of how you interact with them, on the assumption that how you treat the staff will give some indication of how you will work with others on the job.

If you know in advance where you will be eating, it may also be a good idea to check out the menu before the actual interview. This way you will be ready to order and have one less thing to worry about. It is also a good idea to order something that is easy to eat. For example, you might want to avoid a big hamburger or spaghetti.

Make sure you have cash or a credit card. Odds are the interviewer will pick up the tab, but it is always best to be prepared for the unexpected.

3. Interview over drinks
The first piece of advice for this situation is just common sense – watch how much you drink. It’s best not to have more than one. Align your drinking with the interviewer – if he or she orders a beer, you should do the same.

4. Interview while walking
When walking, try to match the pace of the interviewer. If he or she is walking slowly, you do the same; if more quickly, match the person’s stride as well. If you are feeling a bit nervous, you can buy a coffee to have something to hold and sip while walking.

5. Job shadow interview
This kind of interview can seem a bit overwhelming, but it is a great chance to really see the culture of a company and how it operates. Make sure to ask a lot of questions to show your interest in the company. You might want to take a little notebook along to jot down notes.

Also, practice your elevator pitch beforehand. As you move around, people are going to be curious about who you are, what you do and why you want to work at their company. This way you will be ready with a good response.
