Office temperature. It may seem like a trivial thing, but it’s not. If an office is too hot or too cold, it can really affect your comfort, mood and productivity.

In fact, in a recent survey, almost half of those responding reported that their office was too hot or too cold. Moreover, a majority of workers also say that working in an office that is too hot or cold affects their productivity.

Employees can get into battles over a number of things – dirty microwaves, noise, messiness. But no issue can be as polarizing as where to set the thermostat. Fifteen percent of those surveyed reported getting into an argument with a coworker over where to set the thermostat. And 20 percent said that they have surreptitiously adjusted it.

Retail has the most workers reporting temperatures that are too hot, while healthcare has the most reporting temperatures that are too cold.

There are no easy solutions to the problem. Everyone is different and has their own preferences. But there are things you can do to help make your office environment a little more comfortable and conducive to working. Here are a few tips.

1. Change location
If, during a certain time of day, the office becomes too hot or cold, you can talk to your supervisor about changing your location, such as working from home or moving to a conference room to work.

2. Change your schedule
If possible, you can also adjust your work schedule so that you avoid times when the office temperature does not agree with you.

3. Use a fan
If the office is too hot for you, see if you can use a small, personal fan at your workstation. If you don’t have room for a larger one, try one that is run by a smartphone.

4. Use heating devices
If the office is too cold, space heaters are very effective at warming up a smaller area. If, however, you are not able to use one where you work, you can try a heated blanket. You can plug them in right at your desk and drape it over your lap so that is not noticeable.

5. Take breaks
If the office temperature doesn’t agree with you, another alternative is to take a break. Go for a walk, get a little fresh air.
