It appears that many companies are expanding their health and wellness programs. In a recent survey by a California-based staffing firm, about two-thirds of those companies responding said they had beefed up their wellness programs in the past five years.

And workers appear to be happy with the results. Almost all of those responding said their companies supported wellness among employees.

The Payoff of Wellness Programs

More than three-fourths of all companies now offer some type of wellness program. One big reason for such programs is the spiraling cost of healthcare. Employers see prevention as a way to hold down expenses. For every $1 invested in wellness programs, there is a return of $1.50, according to research by the RAND Corporation. Moreover, when employers invest in programs specifically for chronic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, the return jumps to $3.80.

In fact, companies are becoming more creative in establishing incentives for employees to improve their health and stay healthy. One firm pays employees if they don’t check their email while on vacation. Another offers exercise, yoga, meditation, and healthy cooking classes at work. Another company provides free massages for its workers. A company nurse is part of the wellness program at one firm. And some companies are giving their workers fitness tracking devices and providing personal trainers for them.

Because employees are spending so much time at work, health and wellness programs have taken on increasing importance in maintaining worker satisfaction. And companies that are not offering such programs may find it harder to attract and retain good employees.

Also in the survey, employees report that office parties with food and snacks brought to work by other people is one of the biggest obstacles to reaching their health goals. More than 40 percent of those responding said they eat healthier when they work from home. About 60 percent of those responding said they bring a lunch with them to work. Women and workers over 55 were most likely to pack a lunch.

But the survey also showed that half of all employees do like having an office candy jar.

The surveys were conducted by independent research firms. More than 300 human resource managers and more than 1,000 workers at U.S. companies were contacted.
