To get ahead, many still believe the key is to work hard. But in today’s complex business world, although hard work is still necessary, it is not what matters most for advancement.

More important are the ability and desire to constantly learn new skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to adapt to change, according to a recent survey of business leaders by a California staffing firm. Because the pace of change is accelerating and is ongoing, employees must be constantly learning as well to keep up, business leaders say.

Communication skills are also important, the ability to express complex information clearly and concisely.

About one-third of those polled cited learning new skills as most important for advancement. About one-fourth cited communications skills, and one-fourth adapting to change. Only about seven percent of the business leaders contacted listed working long hours as the most important factor in getting ahead.

In fact, studies have shown that business leaders give relatively little weight to performance reviews when considering whom to promote. They rely more on their instincts and relationships because higher level positions require knowledge and analytical skills, the ability to deal with complex business decisions.

Human resource professionals also offered these tips for helping people to advance in their careers:

Joining professional organizations.

These types of organizations usually offer training courses and seminars to help members learn new skills and stay up to date. Joining these organizations also enables members to stay current with trends in their professions and industries.

Volunteering.

This not only helps your community but also gives you the opportunity to expand your skills and take on new challenges and responsibilities.

Training.

Obtaining an advanced degree or a certification is another way to increase your knowledge and skills and also show that you are committed to continual learning.

Working on communication skills.

This involves developing the soft skills, those involved in working with other people, learning how to listen, to persuade, to work as part of a team.
