Successful people. We often wonder, how do they do it? There is no magic bullet. It takes perseverance and resilience. It also takes a good night’s sleep.

Sleep may not be the first thing that comes to mind when we think about the reasons for success. But odds are that if someone is successful, they also have good sleep habits.

Why is sleep so important? Without sleep, we cannot perform at our best. In fact, without sleep, we wear ourselves down. Lack of sleep makes us irritable. We have memory problems and experience cognitive decline. We cannot focus or concentrate. To get a good night’s sleep, there are things we should do, and things we should avoid.

What Not to Do

Do not eat just before bedtime.

Make sure you eat at least three hours before going to sleep. Any later and your digestive system will still be grinding away at bedtime, which may cause nausea.

Don’t drink too much caffeine and alcohol.

It is easy to see why you need to cut out the caffeine – it’s a stimulant and will keep you awake. But alcohol is not good either too close to bedtime. It may initially relax you, making it easier to fall asleep, but it causes you to wake up more time during the night. A big reason for this is that it is a diuretic, and you wake up because you need to go to the bathroom.

Don’t hang out in your bed all day.

Do not do work in your bed or use it for anything else other than sleeping. If you do, you condition your body to expect some type of activity in bed, rather than winding down and relaxing in preparation for sleep.

Don’t keep the lights on.

Lights hinder the production of melatonin in our bodies. This substance helps to regulate our sleep cycles. So, try to make your room as dark as possible.

Don’t get too much sleep.

Research has shown that it is possible to sleep too much. If you do it routinely, you increase your chances of acquiring heart disease, diabetes or depression. Most people need about seven to eight hours a night.

What You Should Do

Meditate.

This helps you to relax and can improve your sleep habits. The one thing that interferes with sleep the most is stress. Meditation can help you to focus, to gain more control over your thoughts and emotions to reduce your stress.

Exercise.

Exercising uses energy, which in turn tires your body. And this helps you to sleep better.

Stick to a regular schedule.

Going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning will condition your body to be ready for sleep.
