We are always looking for ways to be more effective at work, to improve our performance. Research has now shown that there are a few things that we can do to improve our work output, things that involve making just a few simple changes. Here they are.

1. Open plan offices are not all that great.
Open plans have become very popular. The theory behind open plans is that they foster greater communication among workers. But there is also a big downside – it’s harder to get things done.

One large study found that open office plans reduce worker well being by one-third and productivity by 15 percent. People who work in open offices complain about the noise and the lack of space for work. People who had their own office, on the other hand, were much happier.

Other research has shown that open office plans add to worker stress, conflict, and turnover. So, while moving to an open office plan may save on space, the detrimental effects to workers outweigh any benefits.

2. Lack of sleep is as bad as being drunk
The evidence for getting enough sleep is clear and compelling as it relates to health and performance. But many workers are still sleep deprived. Studies have shown that a lack of sleep has the same effect on our cognitive ability as drinking alcohol. In fact, going a week with only four to five hours of sleep a night is the same as having a blood alcohol content of .1 percent.

3. Multitasking – bad
There is mounting evidence to show that multitasking does not work. In fact, just the opposite – we actually tend to make more mistakes when we multitask. Studies show that people who multitask a lot actually do it because it is more difficult for them to block out distractions.
You get more done if you focus on just one thing at a time.

4. Technology can cause more problems than solve them.
Surveys have shown that many workers do not believe that more technology has made them more productive. Increasing technology has simply led to work taking over people’s lives. They are always connected to the office.

5. Energy boosters do different things.
For example, are you trying to be more creative? Studies have shown that alcohol can actually contribute to creativity – it enables you to tune out distractions and calms the mind.

But if you need to do some hard-charging work and get focused, caffeine is the substance you need. It helps to increase both the amoung and quality of work.

Research has also shown that people who exercise are more productive.
