Not leading by example is very simply a recipe for failure. And there are many executives who have failed because they did not follow this basic leadership concept. It is an easily avoidable error because it has nothing to do with innate ability or experience, but simply making a choice.

Few Do It

According to some experts, there does not seem to be much written about leading by example in management literature. There appear to be few surveys on the subject. And ones that have been made show a dismal regard for leading by example. In one study, only about a quarter of workers surveyed said their leaders embody the values they expect from their employees.

Some experts also contend that this management oversight could be one of the causes for the high amount of employee disengagement reported today, a cause that could be easily fixed.
