Many people feel more pressed for time than ever before. It seems there is always too much to do and not enough time to do it. But we are just not sure how to go about improving our situation, to get out in front of the curve. If this is a problem you are having, here are a few tips for getting more done and bringing a little more order to your life.

1. Take control of your time.
When it comes to work, there are only two kinds – work that you have initiated yourself, or work you are doing that someone else has assigned to you. Naturally, the work we initiate ourselves is what we find more fulfilling and enjoyable, and so making us more productive as well. So, the trick is to increase the amount of time you have for self-initiated work.

Some ways of doing this are by setting priorities, blocking out time for your work, and managing your email time.

2. Being busy is not necessarily being productive
Being busy means you have a lot to get done. But how important is all that stuff you need to do?
Some management experts say busyness is exactly the opposite of being productive. It is a sign of a lack of focus and organization, a scatter-shot approach. It may actually keep you away from doing what is really important.

3. Working smarter, not just harder
We generally view work in a monolithic kind of way – to be more productive, we believe we need to work longer and work harder, pushing ourselves and sacrificing other things. But really productive people know that working smarter produces more results than just working harder. Working smarter means that you are giving your body breaks during certain time intervals, an opportunity for you to reenergize. You are taking time to get enough sleep and to exercise and to spend time with family and friends.

4. Leave important work unfinished.
We usually feel we cannot leave our desk until our task is completed, whether it be a report or presentation. It has to be done. But we can actually do a better job by walking away from it after only partially doing it. By doing this, we spur our minds to subconsciously think about the work while we are away from it. This helps to produce more ideas and a better perspective when we return to it.

5. Measure yourself.
If you want to change your behavior, you cannot do it without knowing where you are and where you are going. To do this, you need to record your efforts, to measure them. For example, if you want to improve your health, you need to record when you go to the gym and what you do there. If you want to improve your diet, you need to record what you eat and when you eat it.
