Starting a new job is stressful. You want to make good impression. You need to learn the ropes, how things are done. You are getting to know a lot of new people. What can you do to make sure you get off to the best start possible? Here are a few ideas.

1. Listen more than talk.
You naturally have your own ideas, things you have learned from previous jobs. And, down the road, you can contribute your thoughts. But, as a newbie, you need to learn how things are done at your new place of employment. You won’t make any friends if you start out by explaining to them what they are doing wrong, and how things were done at your former places of employment.
Listen, and follow others’ guidance at first, until you learn the culture.

2. Be on time.
This should be a no brainer. Nobody likes it when someone shows up late for a meeting or any other appointment.

3. Take on new assignments.
This is not something to do right away, but after getting your bearings in your new job. First, you should make sure you feel comfortable in the job you were hired for, and are meeting expectations. After a little time, however, you can ask to help out with other work, to contribute to the overall effort. It’s a good way to meet people and show you are a team player.

4. Avoid office gossip.
When you are a new hire, it’s best to confine your conversation to work related matters and other more mundane topics, like the weather, local sporting teams, and the like. Leave the gossip and rumors to others. You want to make friends, not enemies.

5. Ask questions.
If you need information, ask. You will need to learn the policies and procedures of your new employer, and you will probably have questions. Take notes as well, so you won’t have to annoy coworkers by asking the same question over and over again because you forgot the answer.

6. Don’t complain or demand.
One sure way to annoy people is to continually complain about assignments, working conditions or other aspects of the job.
Also, if you are new to the job, avoid making demands about office supplies that you need or other perks that you feel entitled to.

7. Make good use of your lunch time.
This is a good opportunity to meet other people at work. Go to lunch with coworkers and get to know them.
