Interviewing is one of the most stressful parts of the job hunt. There is a lot to prepare for. Another problem with interviewing is trying to read the hiring manager, to discern how things are going and whether you are making a good impression or not.

But if you are observant, there are signs as to how things are going. Here are a few indications that things may not be going so well.

1. It’s a short interview.
Generally, companies will give you some idea of how long the interview might take. If it ends sooner than expected, that is probably a sign that you are not a leading candidate. On the other hand, if the interview runs longer than expected, that is a good sign, an indication that they like you.

2. You don’t get any hard questions.
Don’t be fooled by this. You might think that the interview went well because they only tossed softball questions at you. But that is usually a bad sign. If they were really interested in you, you would be getting some hard questions. If they are interested, they want to really test your mettle, to see how you would respond to difficult situations, or solve difficult problems.

3. The interviewer doesn’t talk about the company.
If they really like you, they want to entice you to come and work for them. So, they would naturally talk up the company, to try and show you what a great place it is to work. If they don’t do much of this, that usually means they don’t really care if you come to work for them.

4. The interviewer doesn’t ask when you can start.
If they are really interested in you, they want to know when you can start working. If they don’t ask this question, it probably means that they have crossed you off the list of candidates.

5. The interviewer doesn’t mention pay.
If the interviewer is really interested in you, odds are he or she will bring up the issue of salary. The company would naturally want to know if what you want and what they can pay are in the same ballpark. If the interviewer doesn’t mention this, it may mean they don’t want you.

6. The interviewer doesn’t talk about what happens next.
If they like you and want you to work for them, the interviewer will usually discuss what the next step is in the hiring process, where you go from here. If he or she doesn’t, don’t get your hopes up.

If the company isn’t interested in you, don’t take it too hard. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they think you are unqualified, just that you are not the right fit for them, either in terms of skill set or personality. Keep at it.
