It has become a major consideration for just about every company these days – how to keep everyone in an increasingly diverse workforce happy, especially with the diversity in age. We have Gen Xs, Gen Ys and baby boomers all working side by side, each with different attitudes and priorities. It may seem like a huge task to keep them all happy.

Keeping them all happy generally goes by the term engagement. In other words, how do you keep your employees engaged? To answer this question, you first have to define what you mean by engagement.

The definition of engagement usually involves a situation where workers are able to achieve their work and life goals, while at the same time contributing to the goals and outcomes of the organization they work for. In others words, engagement can be summarized in two words – satisfaction and contribution, workers satisfaction in their work and life, and workers’ contribution to the goals of the company.

To increase engagement, companies need to help employees reach their optimal levels of contribution and satisfaction.

With regard to workers’ contribution, companies can do this by making sure employees clearly understand what is expected of them and why, by giving employees adequate feedback about their performance, and by giving employees opportunities for professional development and training.
Companies can increase satisfaction by giving employees opportunities to do what they are good at, to increase their responsibilities as they grow in the job, and by providing flexibility in the workplace.

Workers’ priorities change with their stage in life. Younger employees put more emphasis on money, since many are starting families and are more active. Middle age workers are more interested in a good work-life balance, while older workers want to feel that their work is meaningful, that they are making a difference.

But it is also important to keep in mind that these are generalizations, and that there a many exceptions to the rule. To increase engagement, managers need to meet with employees individually to find out what is important to them, and then work to align their skills and interests with the goals of their work teams.
