Video is a technology that more and more companies are incorporating into their daily operations. Many use them for training and for compliance, such as monitoring productivity and employee adherence to process requirements and work hours.

Even human resources uses video for such things as remote interviewing, compliance and training.
Now, some are suggesting that this technology can be put to use in other situations as well. For instance, it could be used for situations where having a record of a conversation could head off potential legal troubles. One prime example of this is when a company is terminating an employee.

This is always a potential problem area because a disgruntled employee can make claims – discrimination, for example – about what happened during the conversation, and for which the company has no evidence to refute the accusation.

There are many examples of cases that revolve around a dispute over what was said during a conversation. Having the conversation on video could eliminate these kinds of problems. Many believe that video could be a valuable tool for human resources. Some see a future where human resource professionals wear body cameras to help with risk management policies and to protect themselves and their companies from liability.

But using such technology is not without risks of its own. If a company is considering such a move, it needs to first develop policies and procedures to determine when, where and how the technology would be used. For example, while it may be useful during a termination meeting, it might not be appropriate for a conversation dealing with a medical issue, or a harassment claim.

So, company managers need to first determine how they plan to use it, then come up with an employee policy that states clearly how human resources will use video, and also explain how this will benefit the company and the employees. The company should also have each employee sign a consent form when they are hired stating that they agree to the policy. This should be done as a condition of employment. Waiting to do this until you are ready to fire someone will only cause more problems.
