Job descriptions are a staple of the hiring process. In fact, theyare fundamental to it. Every company uses them. But their effectiveness is another story. Many are dissatisfied with the way job descriptions are currently put together. The language is turgid and bland, the terms abstract. They can be full of jargon, yet barely decipherable.

In other words, they are not very good at doing what they are designed to do. That being the case, what can be done to improve them? Some recruiters have suggestions.

One idea is to add commentary to the job description. This commentary is not actually part of the job description itself, but more in the way of context. And because it is not part of the actual job description, it doesn’t have to follow job description rules – filled with abstractions and vagueness – but can be put in plain, easy to comprehend language.

The commentary would include information about what it’s actually like to work at the job, the day-to-day things that the person would have to do. The commentary would also describe the people the job holder would work with. It would also talk about the role this job plays in furthering the mission of the company. The additional information could also talk about the kind of person who would be best in the job, and how the previous person did the job.

And since all of this is not part of the official job description, you wouldn’t have to run it by the human resources or legal departments, where many different hands would probably suck the life out of it. Moreover, you could also use more conversational language.

To get this kind of additional information, you could send out a survey to the people who know the job best – the supervisor for this job, and the coworkers in the department. Reach out to them, and you will probably get some good information and insight into the requirements for the job.

Other good information to add to the job description is data about the company itself. And the best way to do this is to talk about the people who work there – who they are, and why they chose your company.

All of these things will turn a dull and drab job description into something truly compelling and interesting for job seekers to read
