When it’s time to manage your employees’ performance, don’t forget to do the following:

  • Make sure the workers’ goals mesh with your company’s or department’s goals. Do so by creating SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals and align them with those of your department or company. Doing so means you will help your team members know how their work contributes to the company’s performance. In addition, by linking employees’ goals with those of your department/company you can help keep them engaged and focused on helping your company or department succeed.
Make sure you create plans to help develop your workers and grow their skills. Once you and your team members meet to go over their performance, make sure you put together a development plan for each worker.
  • The plan can include such items as your expectations for improvement as well as the employee’s own personal career goals. The development plan also should include learning activities, such as seminars, certificate programs, courses, etc., that your team members can take in order to improve skills and performance. Creating a plan with your employees shows that their career goals are important to you as well as to the company. This will help increase your employees’ morale and engagement.
  • Make sure your team members take the time to complete self-assessments of their performance. This allows you to see how your employees view their performance and will give them a say in the assessment process. Don’t worry that your staff members will give glowing reports of their work; most employees actually are harder on themselves than their supervisors are. Asking for their self-assessment is a great way to find how they view themselves and will allow you to deal with any differences of perception.
