Many people have experienced this situation during a job search – they have interviewed with a company and, as far as they know, it went well. But afterward, nothing. There is no word at all from the company, even after several weeks have elapsed. This, in fact, is a fairly common experience, affecting about 60 percent of all people who interview.

What happened, you may wonder? There may be a number of reasons why you have not been contacted after the interview. And, to be clear, none of these reasons are justifications for not notifying an applicant of his or her status, which is simply common courtesy and good business practice.

1. They have hired another person.

During the interviewing process, the company might have received a referral from someone, and the person referred turned out to be someone the company really liked.

2. The company believes that you are overqualified.

They might feel that you have too much education and experience for the job you have applied for. And that may lead them to believe you may demand a salary that is too high or that you won’t stay in the job for very long.

3. They are a little callous.

It just may be that the hiring manager is a bit of a jerk. He is focused solely on finding the right person for the job, and when he has crossed someone off the list, they are pretty much off his radar screen. He is devoid of empathy, and so cannot put himself in the place of someone waiting for news. The question that arises in this situation is whether you want to work at a company like this.

4. The company is going slowly to make sure they find the right person.

They may have many candidates to sort through, depending on how many they have decided to interview. Plus, there may be a number of people involved in making a hiring decision, and all of them need to be consulted.

5. The job may have been eliminated.

As hard to believe as this may sound, crazier things have happened. The company may have simply decided to farm out the duties of the job to others in the company, feeling that they can operate better that way.
