In today’s work environment, more and more people are working outside the office. This type of arrangement presents its own kinds of challenges for employees and managers. Many managers may assume that because workers are at remote locations, there is less need to supervise and work with them. But business experts say that just the opposite is true. These remote employees need more attention than if they were based in the office.

It is especially important for managers to maintain communication with remote workers. Because they are away from the office, they may feel isolated. It is important to make them feel that they are part of the team. For that reason, managers of remote employees should always keep the lines of communication open, whether through phone or email, and encourage remote workers to keep in touch.

Related to this is maintaining team morale. With employees working remotely, it is more difficult to create a sense of team spirit. In order to foster a team oriented work environment with people in remote locations, managers need to encourage communication among team members, and create partnerships among remote employees to encourage people to work together.

Remote workers also present another challenge for managers – making sure these workers stay productive without at the same time micromanaging them. Although as a manager you want to maintain good communication, you cannot fall prey to the urge to control everything that the remote worker does. This in effect defeats the purpose of working remotely, which is to encourage greater independence from the employee.

To prevent this problem from developing, managers need to establish some ground rules at the outset. Before the employee begins working remotely, he or she needs to work with the manager to determine what goals he needs to reach. These goals need to be clearly spelled out, and the employee needs to held accountable for reaching them. It might also be useful to set up benchmarks to help the employee stay on course toward his or her ultimate goals.

Also, it is important to make sure the employee has all of the equipment he or she needs to do his or her job effectively, and these requirements should be discussed before the employee begins work at the remote location.
