When the recession hit, many companies began shedding jobs, and the unemployment rate shot up. As a result, many people gave up any thought of searching for a new job because they were concerned about keeping the one they had. But now that the economy is improving, the unemployment rate is slowly beginning to decrease, workers are again looking around to see what the job market is like.

Unfortunately, for many workers who have been out of the job market for a while, things have changed, and they will have to get used to some new ways to doing things. If you are in this position, you will need to be careful to avoid making some mistakes that could sink your job search.

One problem for people who have been out of the job market for a while is that they place a higher value on their skills than the market does. During the recession, salaries remained pretty much stagnant, even declining a little. With unemployment higher, many companies feel they can be more particular in whom they hire and more frugal as well, a simple matter of supply and demand.

So, if you are in a job search, you need to be realistic about how much you will actually be able to earn. It may be less than you think. Do some research about what salaries are like in your area. There are several sources you can use for this – online sources such as PayScale or Glassdoor. recruiters, colleagues in professional organizations, even friends.

Another problem may be also that you have not kept up with social media. You may have not felt the need to post on LinkedIn or Twitter or Facebook, or even have a web page. But today, recruiters and companies rely far more on social media than they have in the past. To increase your network and your chances of finding a job, you need to have an online presence.

Another issue is that you don’t present yourself to your best advantage. You don’t explain well enough your skills and accomplishments you have gained in your job. Showing your skill and experience is doing more than just adding a new title to the top of your resume.
