To help attract qualified job applicants, many companies now have career sites online, which advertise vacancies and give other information about the emplooyer. But often these sites are not organized as well as they could be. There are some simple changes that could go a long way toward making these websites more user friendly, according to recruiting expert Nick Leigh-Morgan.

For example, often the job listings are too hard to find. The user has to first access some drop down menu and then look for another heading. Users should be able to see the job listings after at most one click. And the link on the homepage should be easy to see.

Also, many job sites have no information for users on where they should send their resume/CV if they want to submit it to the company. Again, there should be information on this and it should be displayed prominently.

The site also should include information for users on how to sign up for e-mail alerts when new job openings occur, Morgan says.

Another feature that will improve a career site is video. You can incorporate video along with a job description to give more detail about a job. Video also is a great way to give users more information about the company. If video isn’t an option, adding some photos to the site also will improve it by putting a human face on it.

A live chat option is also a way to improve the site. This allows job seekers who are curious about jobs and have questions to talk with people at the company without revealing their e-mail address or who they are. If you answer their questions, you may gain a job applicant that you otherwise would not have. If you cannot do the live chat option, you should at least have an e-mail address where users can contact someone at the company if the user has questions.

Another way to improve the site is to create a section where you list reasons why someone would want to join the company – flexible schedules, free child care, a market leader, or whatever you believe will sell the company to prospective job candidates.
