No matter what kind of job you have, you need mental toughness. Mental toughness is what gives you the tenacity and resilience to tackle the challenges you face at work. It enables you to perform at your best. It gives you confidence.

Mental toughness is what enabled quarterback Tom Brady to bring the New England Patriots back from a .. deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl, when few in the stadium or watching at home thought it could be done. It turns out that one of the things Brady does is brain training exercises to build mental toughness.

Building mental toughness is something everyone can do if they are willing to put in the effort. Here are a few ways to do it.

1. Positive thinking
Whenever you are faced with a challenge, you need to think positive. In other words, instead of telling yourself not to fail, you are telling yourself that you are going to succeed. It’s all about having a mindset of playing to win.

This may seem like a little thing, but research has shown that this little change in how you think about your performance can make a big difference in how things turn out.

2. Be mindful
Mindfulness is another way to develop mental toughness because it changes the way our brain deals with stress. The military teaches it to soldiers, Kobe Bryant and Derek Jeter do it as well.

There are different ways of practicing mindfulness. Meditation is one way.

3. Paint a mental picture.
Visualize yourself doing the things you need to do to succeed. This is what great athletes do. Swimmers like Michael Phelps visualize the race before it happens, going through everything they are going to do in their minds. They visualize how they are going to dive off the starting platform and how they are going to make the turns.

Again, research backs this up. Studies have shown that running through your plan of action in your mind improves your performance.

4. Talk to yourself using your name.
For example, instead of saying to yourself, “I am going to do well,” say, “John Smith is going to do well.”
Again, research has shown that this helps you to control your stress and calms you, enabling you to make better decisions.
