Because of more flexible schedules and better technology, the number of people working from home – part of the time or all of the time — is greater than ever. About one-fourth of all workers do their job from home at least some of the time, more than a 100 percent increase since 2005. Many business leaders predict that by 2020, a large majority of the workforce will be doing some kind of remote work.

The nice thing about working from home is that you can incorporate more healthy habits into your routine. Here are a few ways to make working from home successful.

1. Have a designated workspace
The drawback from working at home is that there are more things to distract you. That is why it is important to set up a workspace where you can focus on work. It should have everything you need to do your job, and everything should be within easy reach. It should be a place where you can avoid distractions.

You should also set up a daily schedule or routine for time that is devoted just to work so you are not knocked off course by distractions.

2. Have a good lunch
Research has shown that when you are hungry, you actually have less willpower. That is why it is important to eat a healthy lunch. It will give you more energy to get you through the day. But you need to avoid the sugars and processed foods because they will just give you a quick energy high, but it won’t last. To maintain energy over longer periods of time, you need to eat fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods.

3. Get some sun.
Another drawback from working at home is that you don’t get outside. So, you need to make sure you get at least 15 minutes of sunshine for the vitamin D that it delivers. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient, necessary for strong bones, a good immune system and enhancing your mood.

So, when you need to take a break, take a quick walk outside for some vitamin D and a little exercise that will make you more alert, energetic, and enhance your mood.

4. Exercise
Again, working at home makes it easier to avoid getting the exercise you need, which is 30 minutes daily of moderate activity. Exercise is essential to keep your energy levels up so that you maintain your productivity. It is also essential to keep you healthy and prevent a host of chronic diseases.
