Your workspace is important. You spend a lot of time there. But it probably doesn’t get the attention it deserves. You have probably given little thought to how things are arranged. You probably have items scattered around, everything from papers and folders and reports to pens and staplers and coffee mugs, maybe even a half-eaten Danish left over from breakfast.

Maybe you have made attempts to get organized, but they never amounted to much. But now, you should get serious about it because research has shown that it can have a big impact on your efficiency and productivity.

Here are some organizational tips for getting your work area into shape.

1. Ask yourself, what three things do you use the most?
Maybe it’s a certain pen or notebook, or maybe your charger, possibly even post-it notes. Whatever those items are, organize your desk so that they are placed near your dominant hand for easy access. Follow the same procedure for all of the things on your desk. For all of the things you don’t use that much, place them closer to your non-dominant hand.

2. Make sure you are comfortable.
Well, of course, you say, comfort is important. But how much attention do you really give to comfort? Do you find that after sitting for a while, your back is hurting? Maybe it’s time for a new chair. Would you rather stand than sit while working? In that case, can you get a standing desk? Are you having trouble seeing the screen on your laptop? Would a monitor work better?
These are all just little changes, but put together, they can have a big impact on your productivity.

3. Clean up every day.
If you want to keep your desk organized, you have to maintain it regularly. Take five minutes at the end of each day to clean things up and get organized. Put all of your items where they belong, and get rid of all the clutter that has built up. This way, when you come to work the next day, you will be greeted with a clean and well organized workspace that will help you get your day off to a good start.
